More than 30 companies from utilities, wind, solar and other new energy industries have formed the American Clean Power Association, which seeks to form a new organization "that better represents the renewables industry of today," AWEA said in a statement to the news site.
"Collaboration with our colleagues across different renewable energy industries makes good business sense because success for the renewables energy industry is mutually inclusive of all these technologies working together," AWEA said.
The merger comes a year after AWEA rebranded its annual trade show as CLEANPOWER and expanded the event to cover other forms of renewable energy and energy storage. The first CLEANPOWER show was to be held earlier this year but was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Just what the merger will mean for AWEA is unclear. The new clean power association has retained recruitment firm Spencer Stuart to find a new CEO. Tom Kiernan is the current CEO of AWEA.
At least one other renewable energy association was approached about merging with the new organization. Solar Energy Industries Association CEO Abigail Ross Hopper told GTM it rejected the offer because her group felt it could be a more effective advocate for solar by remaining independent.
